Kabusecha
The english name for Kabusecha is half-shaded tea (literally "covered tea").
Shading the tea plant (Camellia Sinensis) to increase its quality has a long tradition in Japan. In the Kagoshima region in southern Japan, with its very active volcano "Sakurajima", the tea bushes are shaded with special nets in good growing locations.
Kabusecha (semi-shade tea) is harvested from tea plants that are shaded by 50%-70% with special nets (kabuse) during the last 7 to 10 days before harvesting and thus grow during this time under similar light conditions as the wild tea plant grows. Due to the reduced light supply, the tea plant produces more chlorophyll and other active ingredients, especially more of the sweet-tasting amino acid theanine. At the same time, fewer bitter substances are formed. Its characteristic "shadow aroma" is called "ooika".
