Gyokuro
玉露
ぎょくろ
Fully shaded tea, which is shaded for a maximum period of 3 weeks and up to 90% before harvesting. In comparison, Kabusecha half-shade tea is only shaded 50% for an average period of 10 days. Shading increases the theanine content compared to an unshaded Sencha and reduces tannins. Traditionally, Gyokuro was mainly grown in the region around Kyōto, but other tea-growing regions (terroirs) such as Shizuoka, Yame and Kagoshima have long since followed suit. Gyokuro is known for its characteristic full-bodied, sweet aroma and a mostly light-colored cup as well as the needle-shaped leaves due to the usually medium-strong steaming (Chūmushi).
