Chiran
Chiran is a mountainous region in Kagoshima Prefecture and is considered one of the best tea-growing areas in Japan, where the Shimodozono organic farm is also located.
The chamurai on the left (a combination of the words for cha=tea and samurai=warrior) is the mascot of the region and you will encounter him again and again on your way through the numerous tea stores and tea rooms on Kyushu
The proximity to Sakurajima, one of Japan's most active volcanoes, which regularly covers the region with clouds of ash, makes for very fertile soil.
In combination with the cooler temperatures of the higher altitudes and the tea cultivars that thrive particularly well here (including Yutaka Midori and Yume Kaori), the volcanic soils form the basis for the mostly full-bodied, strong taste of the tea, which is further emphasized by the Fukamushi steaming process that is common here.
