Matcha bowl or tea bowl. Matcha bowls are usually made of ceramic. Over the centuries, various ceramic styles have developed in Japan, resulting in a wide range of colors, shapes and patterns for matcha bowls for different tastes, occasions and seasons.
The "right" matcha bowl should have a nice bulbous shape - especially for beginners - so that there is enough space to whisk the matcha. It should sit comfortably in the hand and, of course, be visually appealing.
For the Japanese tea ceremony, the season is also taken into account. There are seasonal motifs and thick-walled, taller bowls that are mainly used in winter and finer, open bowls in summer.
If possible, the host will also try to respond to the guest by adapting the bowl to the occasion or, for example, selecting a bowl from a particular region or by a particular artist.
In addition to our catalog goods, you will find a large collection and sales exhibition of contemporary and historical matcha bowls and other tea accessories at the Shimodozono headquarters.
